Here is my double page spread draft, I was very happy with this page although I felt it was lacking colour and continuity. Because of this in my final double page spread, I changed the page and added a white border and some colour to really make the page pop.
I began by blurring my main image,before I did this, I cut out the athlete. This blurred effect gives a look of speed.
I copied the athlete and placed her back where she was but not blurred. This gives the viewer the idea that she is running so fast that the background is blurred.
I began adding coverlines to my page to build a template to add other information. I carried across the lines either side of 'Advanced' onto my contents page for continuity.
Here I added a header and footer which gave my page a border like look. I added a barcode to fit with common codes and conventions of regional and international magazines. I have kept all of my fonts very similar yet used larger bold fonts for important information that I wanted to stand out. For example 'Why elites are different'
Here is my final front cover after looking at the page in detail, I realised that my text was all too close to thew edges of the page, because of this I had to use indesign to re-align everything on my page.
This is my final front cover, here, everything is aligned and looks proportionate. I am happy with this cover. The female on the cover relates to Laura Mulvey's theory of the male gaze. This is because she is wearing very little clothing, you could argue that is she is trying to draw attention by doing this, as she is on the front cover of a magazine and trying to sell it to customers, drawing male attention. However, I disagree that she is doing this because this is a typical outfit for female athletes on the track in summer.
I created these small example magazines to fit onto my billboard and my contents page. I didn't fill them with lots of detail as they were minor images.I created two of these and used my front cover as the main one. You can see this on my final contents page and cover.
I started by putting a title on my page and adding an advertisement in the bottom right hand corner. This shows my audience that they are able to purchase my magazine and have it delivered to them.
Here I have added a side bar to let people have an insight of what they can read about within my magazine. I have also added a border for my title to give the page some extra colour.
I added the stories to my side bar and some images to add some more detail to the page. I also added my website address so that my audience can find my magazine online.
I began adding small teasers next to my numbers on my contents page. This will make my reader want to read on and find out what is in my magazine.
Here is my final contents page, with my full list of teasers and advertisements, I think this appeals to my target audience as it features a Cornish athlete competing at high level, this relates to Hebdige's theory of youths as trouble and youths as fun. It relates to this theory because the athlete is trouble to compete against as he is a good athlete yet is having fun doing what he loves.
Here is my construction evidence for my double page spread. I began with my main image as the background. I chose to only use one image as I felt it would be more effective and appealing to ym target audience. I decided to cut my title out so that you could see the image through the text. I liked this idea as I did not want to hide much of my image. I kept a white border around my image so that it did not take up the whole page and it allows room for my website etc.
I added the yellow and white lines which feature on my billboard and contents page to keep continuity throughout my pages. I also put my sub-heading in burgundy to keep with m colour palette and add ysome colour to the page.
Here I have added my website address sop that my readers know the can find us online, page numbers and some coloured lines to give the page some brightness.
This is my final billboard. I really like this design as it fits with the black and white style on my billboard yet still features the same colour palette ad my other magazine pages.
In terms of editing, I was lucky to have very good lighting for all of my images. I chose the correct settings on my camera so that I wouldn't have to do so much editing when it came to it. The only image I really edited was the one of my steel chaser as I had to put it into black and white.
Here is my double page spread image before editing. I kept the brightness and contrast etc. the same, because when I placed the image in black and white, I wanted to keep all of the highlights I had already captured in colour.
Here is my image after editing. I decided to put the image in black and white so that I could make my page stand out by adding colour with my text and layout choices. I preferred this image in black and white and also I felt like this went against Giroux's theory of youths being the 'empty category'. I feel like my magazine disproves many theories as Giroux's theory says that youths are blamed for society's problems, which they are, yet they merely reflect the concerns and anxieties of the adults. I feel like I am portraying all of the athletes in my images in a good way and I think my magazine will change people's view of youths in the media to a more positive view.
When looking at my images, I am very pleased with the outcome. I couldn't have asked for better lighting as my images were all taken on sunny days. I was lucky to capture some very intense races and you can tell this by the look on all of my athletes faces. The athletes are all Cornish, which will appeal to my target audience. They are also all young which my audience will ,like also. If I had to change anything about my images, I would only really change the background of them. A clear background may have made it easier to add more text. However, it is very hard to take the perfect image, with the perfect background, when your subject is moving. All in all, I am very happy with my photoshoot and images.
Here are my three original images for my front cover, contents and double page spread. The image of the girl running is the image I used for my front cover I chose this image because I liked the angle. I could also see many things I would be able to do with the image. For example, there is lots of space around the edge for text which is good as there is lots of text on front cover pages. The second image of a male runner in a Yellow vest is the image I used for my contents page. Again, I chose this image as it had lots of room around it for text. I liked the style of this image as it is at a lower angle and you can really see the expression on the athletes face. I also like the colours. There bright colours will draw my readers' attention. My third image of the steeple chaser is what I used for my double page spread. I chose this image as I really liked the water around the athlete. My idea was to wrap my text around the athlete and have an article on steeple chasing.
Overall, I am very pleased with my original images and I think they will appeal to my both male and female target audience. All of the athletes featured are young which means my audience can relate to them
