Contents Page Progress And Changes

Here is a screenshot of my contents page when I first began creating it. As you can see I did not yet have my image on the page. The purple colour fits with the purple on my front cover so carries he theme throughout the magazine. You can also see that there is no sign of the marmalade colour which can be seen on my front cover. My layout is simple and easy to read for the target audience. They are able to see exactly what is one ach

From this screenshot, you can see that I decided to put the title on the right hand side of the page. This was because it will fit better with my image if it is on this side. As you can see I also added some of the marmalade-orange colour, which can be seen on my front cover. This is to fit with the house style of the magazine. With all the text being on one side it makes it easier for my audience to read. The plain and simple layout represents my magazine as laid back and easy reading.
This is my contents page draft. As you can see, I have both the marmalade-orange colour featured on my front cover, along with the purple that is featured also. I colour matched both colours to make sure they were the same ones used throughout.I also increased the size of the page numbers. This was to make them stand out more. I kept the background in the dirty white colour that I took the image in originally . I like this colour as it isn't as boring as just plain white, yet it doesn't distract from the information and main image. I also removed the white in the gaps of the word 'CONTENTS'. I feel that this made it a lot bolder and it fits better with my colour palette. I like the layout of the page as it is plain and simple making it easy for my audience to read and enjoy.
This is my final contents page. After asking some questions I decided that my contents page was too plain so I changed it around to make it more appealing and fit better with my colour scheme. It is eye-catching and appealing to my audience. I feel this look will make my magazine stand out on the shelf in a shop. I decided to use this image as it is my favourite. Appealing to both genders of my audience.

Front Cover Progress And Changes

Here you can see the image I have decided to use, along with my masthead and main coverline. At this stage I was still undecided as to what colour and size my masthead should be. I edited my image so that it was brighter and gave a more dramatic effect. I decided to keep my main artist (Beth Sully) name in the same colour a her jumper. The colour of her jumper set the main colour in my colour palette for the magazine. The font I have used for my masthead is similar to that of ELLE and Vogue magazine. This represents my m,again as more feminine as the magazines it is based on are female targeted fashion magazines. This style of font will appeal to my female target audience.

I decided to change the colour of my masthead to purple. I did this because my contents page features purple. I wanted the colours to flow throughout and this colour shows female connotations. In order to keep the same colours throughout the magazine I changed my colour palette to muted pastels. These include the colour of my model's jumper, purple and other similar colours like green, beige etc. From this image you can also see that I began adding more detail to make it look like a real front cover. Barcode, web address, price etc.
Here is my front cover before I made more changes to it. After receiving some feedback I decided to move the date to the top left hand corner along the side of the 'L'. I also adjusted my coverlines to make them fit around the page better. I made the gap between 'and' and 'Britney' smaller as it was too big and looked out of place. I edited the text under 'Beth Sully' to make it fit along the image better. The artists I have mentioned are all female. This will attract my taffeta audience of young females and some males also. However, I have mentioned more males on my contents page to satisfy the needs of the small percentage of males in my target audience.
Here is my final front cover draft. I changed the size of my main coverline and put it into italics to make it stand out as the main coverline. I also did this because I felt it looked a lot better. I changed the font all of my artists' names to the same font. I did this so that it flows throughout the page. I have again kept the marmalade-orange and purple colour scheme for the whole page. I feel the colours I have used have really made the page pop. This is the style I was looking for. I added a puff to make the page more realistic. It also adds extra benefits to the readers of the magazine. The audience will be intrigued to find out what can be found inside.

Here is my final front cover. I decided that my main image looked better as a bigger medium close up and it also made my text fit a lot better around the page. I feel that this makes it easier to read for my target audience. It also draws more attention to the reader with the bright colours of the jumper. I feel that this will stand out on a shop shelf and could be a top seller! My information is clear and easy to read, making this a key reason to buy it. I am happy with this final design and will not be making any further changes to it.

Double Page Spread Article

Music has always been my passion! I have been singing since I was about 12 years old and I haven’t stopped since! I must admit, singing so much around the house drove my parents insane. It got to the stage where I wasn’t allowed to sing past 9:30 at night because I was keeping everyone awake!  I write my own songs. It started when we had to enter a song we had written independently, for a competition in school. I  was amazed to find I had won the competition. After that, it gave me the confidence to write more. Writing music comes naturally to me, I find it really relaxing, as it gives me the chance to take my mind off of things that have happened during the week. My songs tend to be about everyday life, and the struggles that young people go through. From life at home, to life in school or time spent with friends. Music is an easy way to express things and show how you really feel.  My career had a rough start, I was told countless amounts of times that I wasn’t good enough. That I needed to give up, start something new. But I knew that this was me, this is what I wanted to do and this is who I wanted be. A superstar, as cliché as it sounds, I wanted to be known, someone for people to look up to! Somebody that people would talk about and be amazed by. I promised myself that I would achieve every goal I set for myself. Now, 8 years down the line, 20 years old and I’m releasing my first album and have two of my singles in the UK top 40 within weeks of being released. I couldn’t ask for anything more and I’m pleased to say I’ve reached my goals. But I’m not stopping there. “I’m heading straight for the top and I’m not looking back.” I plan to release more of my new songs before my heavily talked about album ‘No turning back’ is released on February 21st 2016. I think this album shows a clear representation of me and who I am as a person. I have included some songs I wrote when I was younger along with many newer, more cheerful, songs. My mum has had an amazing influence on my career. She was the one who kept me going and picked my up again when I was pushed back down. Her recent battle with cancer, influenced a lot of my songs in the album and reflect the way I was feeling in that time. A mixture of happiness when celebrating what could have been her last few days, along with the sadness that I may never see her again. Having recently been given the all clear, our bond has become even stronger; my biggest supporter is here to stay.  Even now she still tells me off for singing too much she says “Beth if you sing for every waking hour of the day, you will have no voice left to sing with”. Although we bicker, I’m just so happy and grateful to have such an amazing woman in my life. I wouldn’t change the path I have taken for the world. I would encourage anyone thinking of taking up a career in music to do so. Follow your heart and things will go your way, not always right away, but perseverance is the key to a successful career. Trust me, I speak from experience.

Mood Board

I have chosen to use muted pastel colours for my colour scheme. These include 'solar power' this is a sort of marmalade colour, also  'bell flower' which is a pastel dark purple. I will use these two colours along with black and white in my magazine as my main colours. You can also see some examples of front covers, these all feature one main image. This is what my magazine will look like. I will use a medium close up for this, as the brief states. My double page spread will feature one main image across both pages. Text will surround my image. My contents page, unlike normal magazines, will feature only one image, instead of 3-4. I have decided this because i feel it will make it more simple and not distract you from reading the text. Images will be bold and eye-catching, along with bold titles. I will use serif and san serif in my magazine to break up the formalness of it all. I like the plain simple backgrounds of the  Billboard magazines, I will follow this theme for my magazine.

Magazine Images

This image will be used for my contents page, I like it because of it's white background and the image itself is very clear and crisp. I used very little editing on this image as the white backdrop made it quite light and bright anyway. I changed the contrast sp that my model didn't look pale against the background. The lighting set up I had was very goodie the sense that I didn't need to do much editing. I used the blemish tool to remove small blemishes on the models face and it also came in handy to remove spots on the guitar.

This image will be used on my front cover as it is a medium close up as the brief specifies. I edited this image as it was very dark. I adjusted the brightness to make my model more visible against the black background. I used the blemish tool to remove any small blemishes on my model's face. I also adjusted the contrast to make my model's jumper brighter and her face less orange in the light.

This image will be used for my double page spread, as you can see from the title I have began creating it. This image was very dark. I had to again adjust the brightness and contrast to make the legs more visible as you could not see them. I also used the blemish tool to remove small blemishes on my model's face.

Original Images

Here are all of the images I took for my magazine, as you can see, some of my images are very dark. Because of this, I had to edit them to make them more visible and better for my magazine. Some images are out of focus, therefore I will not use them for my magazine. I enjoyed doing the photoshoots, I learn a lot, from adjusting lighting  to posing my models how I wanted them and making sure they were comfortable posing for me. If your model is not relaxed, they will not pose how you want them to and you won't get the images you want. I found it important that I not only got images of the girls and also a boy so, so that it balanced out the genders. If i was to do0 the hotshots again I would make the ones on the black backgrounds of the girls much brighter. I would do this by adjusting the lighting. This would have saved me time editing them in photoshop.

Masthead Creation

Here are some examples of popular music magazine mast heads. I like the idea of them all being quite plain and simple. This makes them easy to read on almost any background. I understand the reason for a large bold font for the magazine masthead, however I prefer the more subtle mastheads such as Billboard and the more artistically created mastheads such as the rolling stones example. I feel through creating a more original and unique masthead my magazine will stand out more successfully to the target audience. Thus potentially selling more copies and being more memorable.

Here is an example of fashion magazine mastheads. The fonts are all extremely similar and might even be the same font. I like the style of these mastheads and will look into doing something similar with mine creating a hybrid based on the styles of popular music magazines and feminine lifestyle magazine. This font is feminine and sophisticated which would make it appealing to women in social grades A-C1. Because mine is aimed mainly at younger women and males also, I would go for a more youthful typography style.

Experimenting with typography styles

Here are some fonts I found in examples of my masthead name I like these examples an I think I may use a similar style for my magazine front cover. This style is very similar to the fashion magazine mastheads.
